Introduction
Groups of trees distinct from pines, elms or poplars appear here, sometimes as large shrubs. They grow in deltaic environments with brackish waters, deep well-drained soils, near the dunes.
This is the tamariu (Tamarix gallica), characterised by small scale-like bluish-grey leaves, white or pink flowers in spikes and a fissured trunk.
It is well suited for stabilising dunes and riverbanks, although its high water consumption can lower the water table.
Traditionally, its branches and bark were used as an astringent, as ropes for water wheels due to their flexibility, and containers made from its wood were once used by people suffering from spleen ailments.
