Garrigue and Maquis Birds

Route POI

Index card

Introduction

This rocky, sun-exposed terrain favours vegetation formations such as garrigue, dominated by garric (Quercus coccifera), and especially maquis, formed by tall shrubs like tree heath, aladierno and lentisk.

The most common birds here are warblers, which move within the shrubs and make short flights between them. The most common are the Sardinian warbler and the elusive but beautiful Dartford warbler.

In clearings, rosemary, lavender and esparto grass grow. On the warm ground, you may spot lizards, harmless snakes such as the ladder snake or horseshoe whip snake, and even more dangerous species like the Iberian viper.
