Introduction
Sunny slopes, once covered with vineyards, are now occupied by Aleppo pine forests, with some stone pines, especially in the lower areas. Oaks and holm oaks, as we will see later, still persist in ravines and cooler areas.
This forest is the result of agricultural abandonment and subsequent reforestation. The aim was to obtain an alternative economic yield to vineyards, although this too declined over time. The pine forest’s undergrowth includes rosemary, black cistus, grasses, heathers, lentisks and aladiernos, all typical Mediterranean vegetation.
It is a forest adapted to drought and wildfires, as pines use fire to disperse cones, and many shrubs can resprout after fire.
Looking ahead, you will soon see the castle of Eramprunyà perched above Bruguers.
