Introduction

The Pyrenees is a mountain range formed more than 80 million years ago due to the shock of the Iberian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which caused the take-off and the stacking of the existing rocks between the two plates.
The materials that make up the rocky substratum of Núria are the oldest in the Pyrenees, with radiometric registers that exceed 540 million years old. In the gorges of the Núria river we find gneiss (ortho-gneiss), small meta-processed granite pluton (transformed by efforts and pressures).
These materials, of great hardness and resistance to erosion, are those that have caused, due to the action of the Núria river and after the disappearance of the glaciers, the formation of the Núria gorges.
