Introduction

We are in the shadow of Bufalaranya Castle, its ruined walls are hard to distinguish from the rocky cliff over which it towers. We have entered the stream of Torrent de la Torreta. The grey willow (Salix cinerea), outside the summer months, will provide shelter for birds such as the solitary and timid song thrush (Turdus philomelos) and the blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla), which appear to be wearing berets. A few metres beyond, under a bank of stone, half covered with brambles, is the cavity caused by an ancient upwelling of water. Climbers such as sarsaparilla (Smilax aspera) and periwinkle (Vinca Major) give a lushness to the area. This is the habitat of the noisy blackbird (Turdus merula) who will flee screeching as we approach.
