Introduction

Site of National Cultural Interest (16th century)

This military building, dating from 1544 (16th century), was built under the reign of Emperor Carlos I, as an essential complement to the Citadel. It is in the shape of a five-pointed star, with pronounced angular edges to defend itself from enemy projectiles. Its dimensions are quite considerable and its walls are more than two metres thick. There were terraces for the gun batteries, howitzers and mortars at different heights in order to defend the harbour and the coast. Its garrison held a maximum of two hundred men. This site is an extraordinary example of a coastal artillery fortress.
