The Hermitage of Sant Joan and the “Caramelles.”

Index card

Introduction

The Hermitage of Sant Joan is a small single-nave chapel with a barrel vault and a gabled roof. It was built between the 17th and 18th centuries on top of an earlier medieval hermitage that once stood outside the town walls. Its current restoration dates back to 1884, as indicated on the door’s lintel.

Every Easter Sunday, Prats de Rei fills with music and colour during the Caramelles. After Mass, the singers and dancers parade through the streets, accompanied by the organ and the Esbart Dansaire folk dance group.

Carrying baskets decorated with ribbons, they offer flowers and little songs to the balconies, while the neighbours leave gifts in return. It is a joyful, living tradition that keeps the spirit of community alive and celebrates the arrival of spring.
