MEDITERRANEAN FOREST

Index card

Introduction

You are now surrounded by a typical Mediterranean vegetation made of pine trees, kermes oaks, buckthorns, strawberry trees and lentisks (photo) which we will further discuss.

This shrub tree belongs to the pistachio species and can reach 6 or 7 meters height.

Larger specimens, when cut, produce a latex called mastic. The mastic is used in dentistry to make dental cements and was once chewed to strengthen the gums and perfume the breath.

Once cut, lentisk leaves remain green for a long period of time. It is said that fishermen from Rosas assemble them as bundles that they drop on the seabed to facilitate the laying of squid eggs. By doing so, they increase the squid’s natural reproduction rhythm and get bigger catches.
