Hazelnut

Index card

Introduction

Corylus avellana

We approach the stream of the Font de la Vena and on both sides of the path we can observe some small trees that do not have a defined trunk but instead consist of many feet (photo), they are hazel trees.

It grows on slopes, at the bottom of river valleys and ravines, in shady and cool places, often associated with beech and oak trees, as is the case.

Its fruit is used in confectionery, for chocolates and as dried fruit. We find in its oil interesting applications for food and for the paint and lubricant industry. Its long and flexible branches are used for making baskets, and the thicker ones for barrel hoops. In medicine, the bark and leaves have been used as an astringent, to stop diarrhoea, bleeding and to increase blood pressure.
