Introduction
Here there is a row of cypresses planted in a line alongside the route. This might see very normal, and even go unnoticed, or you might think that they are just planted this way because of a lack of land between the track and the fields or by the whim of whoever happened to be the owner at a particular time years ago.
The truth, however, is that there is often very practical wisdom behind the effort of planting so many cypresses in a line: protecting the crops from the onslaught of the wind, especially the tramuntana.
The cypress is a thick resistant tree which supports the strongest winds and forms a real windbreak from them. And walking the length and breadth of the Empordà, it is not unusual to find these rows between fields and next to roads, albeit more frequently in the north.
