Introduction
American aloe (Agave americana). It is an invasive plant of Mexican origin where it has the name Maguey. It grows in temperate regions and in stony and sunny places.
This plant had many uses. Rope and rather rough fabrics were made from the fibres of its leaves. In Andalusia, ladders were made with the dried flowering stalks.
Its life cycle usually lasts about 25 years, it blooms only once throughout its life and dies after flowering. The flowers appear in summer on a long woody stem that can reach up to 10 m in height.
The alcoholic drink of mezcal is made from the distillation of the fermented extracts of its leaves.
Other invasive plants that we find around are the prickly pear and balsam.
