Introduction

At the centre of this square stands the Monument to the Sardana, a sculpture made of iron plates representing four dancers—two men and two women—holding hands in a circle with their arms raised. They are simple, life-sized figures without a base, as if emerging directly from the ground.

The monument was a gift from the Sigarra Cultural and Recreational Association and was inaugurated in 1975, shortly before the death of dictator Franco. At that time, symbols of Catalan identity, such as the sardana, were beginning to reappear in public life after years of repression.

Today, as in many towns across the region, this monument commemorates the collective and festive spirit of our most emblematic dance.
