Introduction
You are on the ridge that climbs towards the alt de la Roureda and, before that, the viewpoint. To our right lies the valley of Sant Climent and the serra del Montbaig, with Sant Ramon at the summit. The entire Montbaig mountain was also farmland, with vineyards and cherry trees, until the 1950s, when it began to be abandoned.
The dominant shrub in this environment is the lentisk (photo). The lentisk, or mastic tree, is closely related to the pistachio tree, whose fruits we enjoy eating as pistachios.
This evergreen shrub with compound leaves is highly valued as a complement to cut flowers, floral wreaths, etc. For this reason, in the mountains of the Baix Llobregat and many other areas, groups of people can be found harvesting it in bundles for sale.
The sap is called mastic and is used to produce a very aromatic gum or latex. In ancient times, this latex was used as chewing gum and today it is used in orthodontic applications, in the manufacture of varnishes, and also in pastry-making and liqueurs.
