Introduction
From Setcases to the Fishers Cabin |
We propose a walk close to Setcases, going over the River Ter to the fishermen's cabin to take in the different vegetation environments, the riverside forest in the upper part of the River Ter and finally, returning comfortably through the road that goes down from Vallter, the landscape of the valley bottom and the role played by the river. |

Description
From Setcases to the Fishers Cabin |
We leave Setcases and cross the village to discover typical elements of the architecture of the mountain villages. We pass by the side of Sant Miquel and go north. |
When you reach the road, take a track that, just before crossing the Ter River, you take the left on a slight rise. |
At once we gain height and in a left turn we have to look for the entrance to the path that will accompany us to the end. We pass over a hazelnut forest, sprinkled with some birch. There are few views until it reaches a view point caused by a cut that results from an extraction of aggregates. Looking down we see Puig de les Agudes with the ridge that goes to the left towards Puig de Sistra and Collada Fonda on Espinavell. |
Little by little, the hazelnut is boiled in a shrub until a small change in the orientation of the path leads to a pine forest with birch trees, and at the same time some fir trees and some beech trees. At some point, between the hills, you can see the mountains of Puig de la Llosa and Portella de Morens, to Vallter. |
In the pineda the underbrush is clean, rich in mosses and orchids in spring. Sprigs and blueberries make us recognize the high mountains. After a short but steep descent, we approach La Fageda plain, where you can see the silhouette of the small Gra de Fajol, and then at the Refugi de Pescadors, a few meters off the river. |
We are just in the middle of the trip and, although it seems weird, we suggest you return to Setcases for the busy road that goes down from Vallter. |
By a lever we cross the river and, now, near the riverbed, by the bottom of valley, we will return. From time to time it is worthwhile to turn around to take a look back and enjoy Gra de Fajol. |
Next to the road, the drought fields have occupied this bottom of the valley. They are fertile and fresh lands that we use to get hay and feed cattle. We are in the flood terraces of the river, and as it happened in 2018, the force of a flood can fill the prairie meadows and blur its limit when modifying the banks of the riverbed. We need to be aware that the river is alive. |
It is a good time to discover the riverside forests of the high parts of the rivers and the beautiful corners that make the Ter waters, surrounded by willows, trunks and birches. |
Before arriving to an extractive area of aggregates, when crossing the Carboners torrent, there is a track where a long but highly recommended route runs from the Torrent de Vall-llobre to that of Carboners, going alongside the shelter of Jaume Ferrer under the Costabona. |
Now, overlooking the Sierra and Puig de les Agudes in front, which starts off with the valleys of Molló and Espinavell, we will get close to Setcases |
Tips
PATH |
Download the route, in case there is no connection |
We follow signs of GR, local marks and some from the Camí del Ter path. |
We recommend doing it in a clockwise direction. |
The trip is a track with slight rise. Following the track there is no loss but in some points you will have to pay special attention. |
At the final stretch of the path there is a steep descent where you have to go carefully. |
The return goes through a busy road that takes us down from Ulldeter or Vallter. |
WATER |
Although you can collect water from the fountain of the refuge half-way into the trip, we recommend bringing full bottles from the village. |
PRECAUTIONS |
Attention to not get distracted from the path's track. The track helps you know where you are. |
You must cross the river by the lever below the fishermen's shelter. Careful if there's flooding or low current. |
On the highway, despite being busy, cars pass by. |
Respect cattle and close path "doors" as you walk by them. |
Caution at the point of the path where we pass over the extractive zone. There is considerable height. |
WEATHER |
Avoid doing the route on rainy days. |
You are in high mountains so check the forecast. |
MATERIAL |
Footwear suitable for walking. |
Clothes according to the season. Pre-Plan your outfit |
The trip is in the shade but the return on road will be very exposed to the sun. |
Trees can help us walk. |
OTHER EQUIPMENT |
There are panels to discover the town of Setcases from a suggested route. |
There is a panel that speaks of Transhumance just after the Nou brigde (Pont Nou) |
You can request the keys to the fishermen's refuge at the Setcases Town Hall. Only one overnight stay is allowed |
