Introduction

Landscapes by the sea.

This short, pleasant route takes us to the Mascanada area where the Les Comes stream passes through. In these fertile valleys farmers lived in numerous farmhouses. Leaving the valley, we climb up towards the Portes hill, and thus see the difference between the fresh environment of the stream and the drier environment of the mountain range's various forests.

Description

Landscapes by the sea.

The Les Comes or Mascanada (name of the largest farmhouse in the area) valley, demolished by the extreme North of the Ardenya massif. It enters the town of Sant Feliu between Calle Pecher and Calle Enamorats in the direction of Plaza del Monasterio.

We will start the walk between massifs that still have part of their vegetable allotments and the odd fruit tree. On reaching the Can Pugnau farmhouse, we cross the stream and start to gain altitude amongst mixed pine forests (white, stone and maritime pines). The stream we leave behind gains biological interest in its highest part, towards the Pico de les Cols.

We climb up in the direction of the Pico Gros and turn around above the Parrota (currently an adventure centre) to reach the Collado de Portes. We will have passed through pretty little maritime pine and cork oak forests. We will find a couple of points where we can enjoy pretty views over Les Gavarres and Sant Feliu. From the Portes hill (if we look behind us), we'll see the rocks of the Costa d'en Cirera and the foot of the Pico Gros.

Coming down, a fun, entertaining path amongst pine trees and heather brings us close to the Les Comes stream, with the coolness provided by the holm oaks and the undergrowth of Viburnum Tinus and strawberry trees. We also find some laurel shrubs (Laurus Nobilis).

Now we just have to follow the stream, along the right-hand side, between uncultivated, grassy fields which are still occasionally used for grazing. On summer evenings, if there are any pools of water left, we can hear toads and other types of frog.
