Ponds near the sea
An itinerary that discovers the lowest stream of Ridaura and allows us to visit the wetlands of the mouth of this river, the Parc dels Estanys and the Bassa del Dofí. These spaces make up an important retreat for wetland migratory and winter-hunter birds.
The Parc dels Estanys is a large natural space integrated in the urban heart of Platja d'Aro with large size sculptures, crafted by artists; Jaume Roser, Medina-Campeny, Gómez Ascaso and Emili Armengol).

Ponds near the sea
Easy route with little height variance, it is recommended to take the trail with a bicycle because the return to the beginning of the Ridaura, by the right bank, is made up of asphalted roads. The itinerary also goes through the old town of Castell d'Aro, where the Benedormiens castle, the church of Santa Maria, the winery's Museum and the old train station of the Vall d'Aro Petit stand out.
In 1996, the set formed by Benedormiens Castle, Church Square, Nina (Doll) Museum and the old town of Castell d'Aro was declared "Cultural Good of National Interest". The Church of Santa Maria is of late Gothic style with a Baroque facade. You can also visit the Nina (Doll) Museum, which has a collection of more than 300 dolls, that include all periods of time and from all around the world.
Tips
Track:
-Most of the track follows asphalted roads which are not prepared for pedestrians.
-Recommended to ride a bicycle, there are no high height variances.
-To cross from “riba” to the “gola” you will need to get of your bike and walk for about 200m along the beach.
-You can leave the car at the parking lot of Plaça Europa or the market square.
-Parc dels Estanys has two doors, one touches the Ridaura torrent and the other on the Avenue of Luxembourg. It is advisable to begin the itinerary through the door of the Avenue of Luxembourg.
Water:
-In Castell d’Aro`s church square there is a public fountain.
Warnings:
- The via verda (bike lane) is used by bicycles and you need to be alert always.
-In the case of intensive rain the river will break the sand barrier and you will need to cross along the bridge before the estuary in Avinguda de S’Agaró/C-253.
-The itinerary has two parts. The first part passes through the via verda (suitable for bicycles and hikers), but the second part, already coming back, goes through a section without a pedestrian adequate path.
Equipment:
-We recommend that you bring binnacles with you to observe bird species from far away.
